New Technologies on Mine Process Tailing Disposal
The analysis indicated that the unit costs of the tailing dam, the surface disposal method, and the geotextile method were calculated as 2.25 $/ton, 2.29 $/ton, and 7.39 $/ton, respectively. However, the unit price of surface paste disposal method become 2.79 $/ton when cement was used.

A mine water system model is developed and used to show potential water saving strategies through six scenarios. Apart from the base case, these scenarios include the introduction of evaporation reduction strategies, paste tailings disposal, filtered tailings disposal, ore pre-sorting and a combination of the most effective options.

The Site contains three very large tailings piles that are being actively eroded by three different streams (Sneffels Creek and Imogene Creek enter the Site and combine in the middle of the tailings to form Canyon Creek). All three tailings piles are also susceptible to flood events, increased runoff and failure of the existing slopes.

Tailings are ground rock particles from which the valuable minerals or metals have been extracted. An historical overview on hard rock mines shows that since the 1930s, it has become current practice to pump the tailings into storage areas circumscribed by dykes made of the tailings themselves. However, numerous physical and chemical …
