No one size fits all and that is a disadvantage to the ER system. For every chuck size you have, you must have collets and nuts to fit it and that can get expensive very quickly if you buy good stuff. ER40 collets and nuts will only fit an ER40 chuck. ER32 collets and nuts will only fit an ER32 chuck, and so on. This all adds up very quickly.

While an ER collet system can be used with your R8s, it would be a duplication of effort and would subtract at least an inch from the collet to table distance. All collets are for holding round things, the cutters you will be using in your mill all have round shanks, that are standard sizes.

I also have a few fixed increment (non-collapsible) ER32 collets for aligning my indicators that require TIR in the 0.0001" range. If you are using the ER collets to clamp material, then the you are more tolerant of the TIR spec, and more interested in a complete clamping range so would look for a set in 1 mm or 1/32 increments.

If you put an R8 collet in that spindle and put an accurate pin in that collet, what is the observed run out on the pin? My spindle has under 0.0001" TIR. With an ER40 collet chuck, good collets and a good nut I get 0.0002" TIR, maybe a little less, so about the same actual run out of the spindle.

The collet clips into an eccentric ring on the nut that is used to pop the collet loose from the holder when the nut is unscrewed.

R8 is simply too small. NT30/NMTB30 would be a possibility if you can find a spare spindle to use. If you have a bridgeport series 2 mill, then NT40 spindle may be a possibility, as they have a larger head. Also a NT40 spindle (if you have not already found out by now) is much heavier than a R8 spindle.

ER collets have very low TIR, usually around 0.0002", and the R8 holders are around 0.0001". Shar's has some decent nickle plated ER holders that are reasonably priced, they are nicely made and accurate. You can use a ball bearing cinching nut to make collet changes a bit quicker and requires less force to tighten.

General | ER32 or ER40 collets?
For a couple of reasons (limited daylight being one), I'd like to use collets and reduce the use of a keyless chuck. Anyway, it comes down to ER32 or ER40 from ETM. It looks like the ER32 would do everything I need, except for holding a 1" mill. So I'm wonder if there is some reason to get ER40 vs ER32 and a seperate 1" end mill holder.

Using A Er32 Or Er40 In A Bridgeport Mill R8 Collet
If so, they work fine. I have an ETM ER-40 chuck like that and an ER-32 chuck that fits Tormach's TTS system. Both work well. The ER-32 slips out of the TTS 3/4" R8 holder easier for bit changes. The ETM one requires a spindle wrench up top to hold the spindle still while I loosen and tighten the ER chuck nut down below.
